HIS SPIRIT NEVER DIES He waits in lonely silence for a friend to wander by Peering through the jungle growth as once did you and I His clothes have long since turned to battered, tattered rags But he tarries with that old battle flag. That''s what his final orders were to hold this bit of sand To fight and even die in this steamy foreign land. He questions not his duty just continues on to serve Rusty rifle at the ready, but with nothing to observe He'll never ever, ever know his country's quit and run They've left him in the jungle with a canteen and a gun He hears his name whispered in a moment lost in time As if they're finally coming to relieve him on that line. But what he's really heard is a soldiers final bugle call Someone's tracing his name on that long black wall He's the proud young Amercan whose spirit never dies The boy we all remember with the laughter in his eyes. Glory, Glory halleujah his truth is marching in on |
MUSIC
Jack McGuire originally wrote
"His Spirit Never Dies" as a poem to honor our veterans. When put to music, it is sung to the tune of The Battle Hymn of the Republic. This beautiful tribute was published in the Phoenix American Legion magazine.
